Thank you for your article "A Kinder, Gentler Death" [SOCIETY, Sept. 18]. I watched my father die of colon cancer while under hospice care. I asked the people on the hospice staff how they could work in such a depressing environment. The answer stunned me. They didn't focus on the sadness; they focused on the care they provided to the patient and the family, making sure it was a "good death." They felt they had done their job if the patient was able to pass away comfortably, surrounded by family members. I think I will count...

Yes, Cheney's performance was a bit of a revelation, mostly because it really didn't look like a performance (Lieberman, fonder of the Gore catch phrases but so much gentler than Gore when he spits them out, was merely as affable as expected.) But the shocker was in the, well, civilized nature...
Even some of the guys are acting more like the gentler sex. ...LAPD was only using necessary force to disperse an angry throng Monday night, the scale and locale of the disruption may cause serious harm to the force's already tattered reputation. And the city's police commissioner will have to endure the inevitable second-guessing: Was there a gentler way to approach the protesters? Could the police have done their job without firing rubber bullets? Ask an officer with the LAPD, and you won't get much of an answer. Ask anyone else, and you'll get an earful...
Bush uses such slogans as "Prosperity with a Purpose" and "Compassionate Conservative" to distance his campaign from the hard edge of Bob Dole and the anger of Pat Buchanan. But do his and Cheney's records match the kinder, gentler rhetoric...
