...currently include a stipend of $340,000. Indeed, recognition of even the most significant scientific discoveries can take decades. But the research that earned this year's Physics Prize was such an obvious breakthrough that the academy acted with remarkable haste. Karl Alex Muller, 60, of Switzerland and Johannes Georg Bednorz, 37, a West German, became laureates less than two years after their discovery of high-temperature superconductivity and just a year after their findings were first published...
Physicists Georg Bednorz of West Germany, and K. Alex Mueller of Switzerland were named Nobel Laureates for discoveries in superconductivity...
...more generally, by the anarchic and utopian Bohemia of the '60s: the Fluxus group and its best-known member, Joseph Beuys, with his shaman's wands and dead hares; Eugen Schonebeck, with his images of mutants and cripples; K.H. Hodicke, who made fervently swiped homages to Max Beckmann; and Georg Baselitz, creator of clumsy, wistful figures stumbling about in an apocalyptic landscape...
Muller and his colleague, Johannes Georg Bednorz, tinkered with hundreds of different oxide compounds over the next few years, varying quantities and ingredients like alchemists in search of the philosopher's stone. Finally, in December 1985, they came across a compound of barium, lanthanum, copper and oxygen that seemed promising. When Bednorz tested the compound, he was startled to see signs of super-conductivity at an unprecedented 35 K, by far the highest temperature at which anyone had observed the phenomenon. Could this result be correct? Aware of some hastily made superconductivity claims that later could not be reproduced...
...image stream of German expressionism went underground, but not even Nazism could dry it up. It is the deep, continuous current of German modernism; it picks up different names, en route through the century; and here it is again, manifested in the work of painters like Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer and, above all, its titular river-god, Joseph Beuys...
