...credits on which it had counted to finance purchases of Western technology. These benefits were blocked when Congress in 1973 and 1974 linked them to the easing of Jewish emigration from the U.S.S.R., something the Soviets regard as interference in their internal affairs. In the 1976 presidential campaign, moreover, Gerald Ford publicly excised 'detente" from his vocabulary...

Quite by chance it happens that we now have two simultaneous productions of Twelfth Night. The work was chosen by Gerald Freedman, the newly appointed artistic director of the American Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut, as the vehicle for resuming activity after a season's hiatus. And it is the inaugural offering of the second "Broadway at Brandeis" season here at the Spingold Theatre in nearby Waltham. "Fragmented moderation," Michigan Law Professor Vincent Blasi calls it. "Even when they get clear majorities," says Stanford Law Professor Gerald Gunther, "many different opinions come down. The Justices are tending to be loners, more isolated, less inclined to give and take...

Said the inconsolable chief curator of the Versailles Museum, Gerald Van der Kemp: "There has never been an attack on Versailles since the reign of Louis XIV." The palace, which is located about twelve miles west of Paris, had remained unscathed during the Franco-Prussian conflict of 1870, as well as during the first and second World Wars. Responsibility for the bombing was claimed by three extremist groups: Unemployment International, the Revolutionary Worker Group and a military wing of the Breton Liberation Front. French authorities took the Breton claim seriously. A telephone tip turned up a letter from the Breton...
