...meat," said the President. He vowed that the price ceiling will be maintained "as long as is necessary to do the job." Housewives immediately questioned whether the ceiling would work; they urged a rollback of prices as well. Farmers thought that they were being victimized. Iowa Farmer Donald Gerhardt echoed the common sentiment: "The farmer is being singled out to fight inflation and take the whole loss...
...Hawk, the Classic Film Scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold (National Philharmonic Orchestra of London, Charles Gerhardt conducting; RCA, $5.98). In the days when almost everyone loved Hollywood for its epic swashbucklers, almost everyone in Hollywood loved Erich Wolfgang Korngold for his epic, swashbuckling film scores. Starting in 1935 with Captain Blood, Korngold pretty much set the pattern-virtuoso tone poems that reinforced character with melodic motif, heightened situation with orchestral effect and commented relentlessly on just about everything taking place on screen. By 1916, Dreiser was the hero of the avant-garde and the pet peeve of the Nice Nellies, who denounced The "Genius" as literary sewage and got it banned by the censor. Crushed, Dreiser fell silent for ten years...
...English clergyman, Edward Stone, found that willow tea eased the agues of malaria. By 1840, chemists isolated salicylic acid and thought they had a wonder drug, only to have physicians drop it quickly because it had too many harmful side effects. In 1853, Charles Frédéric Gerhardt did a bit of molecular manipulation in his Strasbourg laboratory and made acetylsalicylic acid (C9HSO4). Having found it, he failed utterly to appreciate its value, and put it on the shelf...
