Schaffner's direction has no charisma, no wit, little skill. With the exception of the obvious, lowangle shots of Gregory Peck as the evil doctor, his camera set-ups are standard and static, the editing choppy and unrhythmical, the use of select German symphonies and thundering crescendos at the sight of Peck ludicrous. The pace is non-existent until the last twenty minutes, a bloody brawl between Peck and Laurence Olivier as an old Nazi-hunter, when it may be labeled "slow." The old men resort to biting each other, and the graphic shredding of Olivier's ear and Peck...
That correction is indicative of the frenzy with which corporations, banks and other holders of dollars are stampeding to unload them. The selling has driven the dollar down 19% against the German mark, 27% against the Japanese yen and 34% against the Swiss franc in the past year. Washington seems incapable of stopping the slump; even optimistic statements by the White House nowadays often have a perverse effect. As Otmar Emminger, head of the West German central bank, complains, "The currency markets have become absolutely irrational...
...German spies and student demonstrations don't sweep through Cambridge often; everyday life in the pipe-filled tunnels is much less glamorous. Tall tales and legends aside, most undergraduates rarely come into contact with the network. Some sharp observers, however, will note that through early fall, a swath of grass in the Yard stays green longer than the rest, and through winter that patch melts away its cover of snow and remains in sight. These few will see beneath the legend of the Harvard tunnels...
...proponents of nuclear power compound their irresponsibility with the cavalier attitude they take toward the issue of nuclear disposal. They do not foresee any problems with their methods of nuclear waste disposal. Neither did the managers of the West German power plant which recently released radiation into the atmosphere from a truck accident with one of their disposal vehicles. Anyone who has driven a car knows it is impossible to anticipate a drunk driver, or a bad storm. Those who do not recognize the untimely risks of nuclear power, especially in the light of their dire consequences, have blinded their...
