Although Henry as a character on stage is rather minor, his tyrannical presence guides all the actions to their tragic conclusion. Gerrit Nicolas captures Henry's physical presence with his rotundity and temperamental facial expressions. But Nicolas doesn't stupefy or terrify the audience as his character does in the play because he's missing the regal conceit that makes a man a true king. And Henry's actions make friends turn into enemies and enemies turn into power-crazed villians...
Mondrian was not the only Dutch artist to pursue the dream of social renewal through ideal abstraction-though he was the most gifted one. What of his less renowned colleagues, painters like Theo van Doesburg, Bart van der Leek and Georges Vantongerloo, architect-designers like J.J.P. Oud or Gerrit Rietveld? Though they all used much the same language of geometrical shapes, primary colors and rectilinear layout, their variety as artists is faithfully rendered in the show...

Its aesthetic was seamless, from painting to furniture to architecture, where it made few concessions to the flabby and imperfect human body. Gerrit Rietveld's penitential chairs, rigidly geometric and painted in their bright, winking primaries, go far beyond the ordinary level of Bauhaus discomfort as practiced in the '20s. The Prinsendam was not equipped with a sprinkler system, but none was required because the ship was constructed with as few combustible materials as possible. It also had fire-resistant doors and insulated steel bulkheads. Maintained Gerrit Van Veen, technical director for Holland America Lines: "Even if the Prinsendam had a sprinkler system, I doubt whether this could have prevented the fire from spreading." Holland America officials contended that as the fire raged out of control, the Prinsendam performed superbly. The doors and bulkheads contained the blaze long...
...problems of surviving at the tip of a hostile continent, and today it is more nervous than ever. The neighboring state of Rhodesia has become black-ruled Zimbabwe, and the South African-administered territory of Namibia (South West Africa) is in transition toward some form of black majority rule. Gerrit Viljoen, 53, who is both head of the Broederbond, the powerful and secretive society of ranking Afrikanerdom, and Pretoria's administrator general for Namibia, talked with TIME Johannesburg Bureau Chief William McWhirter about the effect of these turbulent political changes on South Africa's future. Excerpts...
