Last week there was jubilation in the city's poorhouses. The Department of Hospitals announced that henceforth paupers will have a choice of nightshirts or pajamas, suits cut like tailors' advertisements and shrink-proof, shoes of 1938; that pauperesses will get flowery percales, felt hats for winter, straws for summer, stockings still cotton but in stylish tan. As a special treat, garters will be issued to both sexes. Reason: the city discovered that the paupers' clothes were so old-fashioned they had to be made to order; it will be cheaper to buy modern clothes from stock...

His reappearance this year as a Townsend Planner had definite nuisance value to both Candidate...

That report was false, but after Bill Wilson lost his nerve, sneaked away and squealed, they did get Godwin, subdued him with a load of bird shot in the face. He still swore he had planned to come back for Lulu Belle and go straight -after he had robbed enough gas stations. Lulu Belle, out on $200 bail and hiding her fat red face at home, didn't believe him this time. She had found...
...remained snug and cozy at No. 10 Downing Street last week and Mr. Chamberlain went fishing. It had been a titan's task to win brief leisure for this favorite recreation of Britain's best-known brother of the angle and Prime Minister. His method is to get things done by businesslike steps. First, he averted European war by Czechoslovak dismemberment. Second, he won a vote of confidence on this act last week, 366 to 144, in the House of Commons. Third, he averted strife in his Conservative Party by postponing indefinitely the annual Party Conference which...
