...think the non-cynical answer is that the idea of competition makes whatever is being finally obtained all the more valuable. In a world where we no longer have to fight for anything, the closest we get to that primitive sense of sheer conquest must be that of the auction room, where total strangers battle it out for a piece of the spoils. And I think too that that quality of auctions makes memorabilia an especially popular source for auctions...

Dreyfus might be a normal guy. If this is a campaign tactic, it seems to be working. Last night's debate was punctuated by laughter which was more often than not directed at (or with?) him. Benjamin M. Wikler '03did get one laugh, but besides that, Dreyfus is the only show in town. Many students already see the council as a three-ring circus. Presuming Dreyfus doesn't go normal on us, Holworthy basement might become home to a new ringmaster...

...sidewalks of Harvard Square the other day, speeding to yet another appointment--maybe a class or a meeting or a rehearsal. Who knows? It was something I was late for. I was weaving in and out of pedestrians and passers-by--nothing hazardous or anything, just trying to get through without being forced onto the autobahn that is Mass. Ave., while avoiding the possibility of getting flattened by a tour bus full of inquisitive grandmothers from Coral Gables...
