...real problem with Feinberg's scheme may be its reliance on the market. If we have learned anything from the financial crisis, it should be that the market can get things very, very wrong. So paying more people mostly in stock may result not in his stated goal of pay for performance but in pay for randomness. Feinberg is probably correct that his compensation structure won't hurt these firms' ability to retain top talent. Wall Streeters love to let it ride. The question is whether more people hell-bent on boosting their stock price will produce a better outcome...
...spam comprises the vast majority of e-mail messages sent - 78% of the 210 billion e-mails sent each day, according to one estimate. And 93 billion of these manage to get past the technical defenses like spam filters and blacklists. E-mail programs have gotten smarter, but spammers stay one step ahead, using disposable e-mail addresses and sending messages from farms of different computers around the world to avoid being blocked. The garbled text spammers load their messages with to get past e-mail filters sometimes approaches poetry: sites like spampoetry.org chronicle lines like "Confirm you won fund...
...Homes Bravo to Justin Fox for his comments on tax relief for homeowners in his article "Get Homes off Welfare" [Oct. 12]. I don't know if it is politically feasible or desirable to remove all benefits, but how about dismantling tax benefits for owners of second homes? The result is to price local people out of the property market while losing agricultural land to so-called residential development, which may well stand empty...
...Get Credit for That? Justin Fox's "Get Homes Off Welfare" is quite a stretch [Oct. 12]. Real estate values have plummeted not because of government aid but because of people making poor decisions with their money after being convinced they could buy more than they could afford. My wife and I will be putting our tax credit into improving our new home, thereby injecting that money right back into the economy. Plenty of us are responsible enough to know our limitations and make good decisions with our money. Do not take benefits away from us because of the people...
Yakuza gang bosses in Japan give interviews on TV, dine openly with politicians and traditionally hand out business cards, so everyone knows how to find them. Roughly 40,000 mobsters belong to the Yamaguchi-gumi alone. Everybody knows that the yakuza get money from bars and restaurants, construction companies, even private-detective agencies. But these days some of their principal businesses include securities trading and management consulting. They are increasingly, Jake Adelstein tells us in his gripping descent into the underworld, Tokyo Vice, like bankers "with guns...
