Like Benny. Last week, for instance, taping the final effort of the season (to be aired April 21), Dean gunned his Dual Ghia into the parking lot of NBC studios in Burbank at noon. He spent the first hour or so goofing around with his musical director. At 1 p.m., the dancers and Guest Stars Liberace, Comedienne Dorothy Loudon and Tanya the Elephant were brought together for the first time. It was not exactly a dry run with Dean. For one thing, Dean didn't bother to take part; for another, he was breaking out the dressing-room bottle...
...plays cupid for a whisky-throated crooner named Dean Martin, played by Martin himself in an orgy of self-parody. En route to Hollywood from Las Vegas, the swinger has to detour through the town of Climax, Nev. "The only way to go," he leers. In Climax his Dual-Ghia is sabotaged by a garage mechanic (Cliff Osmond) and a piano teacher (Ray Walston) who want to peddle their songs. Martin's only interest is broads ("If I skip one night, I wake up with such a headache"). Unwilling to peddle his own wife (Felicia Farr) along with...
...rear decks, and the new fashion for G.M. cars this year seems to be the "hop-up," a delicate swelling in the rear quarter panel of the car that suggests the outline of a rear fender. G.M.'s square-shaped Corvair has become as rounded as the Karmann-Ghia, and a new curved-roof version of Ford's highly successful Mustang has joined the Valiant Barracuda and the Corvette Sting Ray as the industry's only true fast-backs. Automen have hedged their expensive bets on public acceptance of the new styling by offering most...
...built-in tape recorder. The Beverly Hills are already full of them-transistorized, chrome, four-speaker, stereophonic cartridge models, activated by the car battery. Frank Sinatra's Riviera has one. So have such clan wagons as Dean Martin's Corvette and Peter Lawford's Ghia. Tape recorders also make a sound like Muzak in James Garner's Jaguar, Red Skelton's Rolls and Lawrence Welk's Dodge convertible...
GENERAL MOTORS hopes to snatch off some of the Thunderbird market with its all-new Buick Riviera, which looks like an outsized version of Volkswagen's Karmann Ghia with a big American grille. The Riviera will have a 117-in. wheelbase, 340-h.p. engine, and come in a four-passenger, two-door, hardtop model. Chevrolet, also hoping to cut in on the Thunderbird, plans to introduce a Corvette model with the "fastback look" (Detroitese for the convex rear lines popularized by Jaguar's hot XK-E). The big Chevrolet will have its rear doctored to resemble the pointed...
