Margaret Phillips appears to be awfully young for a queen with a 30-year-old prince as a son. The famous Closet Scene that they play together ought to rend the heart, but fails to; Sawyer must share the blame here. The Ghost (David Byrd) quite correctly makes a visible appearance in the scene; for, however mad Hamlet may be elsewhere, the Ghost is not a figment of Hamlet's imagination. The Ghost's entrances and exits are well handled in all three of his scenes, but his speech is too fast and impassioned, and lacks dignity...
...counter the plastiqueurs of Leopoldville, Adoula imposed a 6 p.m. curfew, and now each day when the sun sets over the Congo River, Leo is transformed into a ghost town. Adoula also closed his border with the neighboring Brazzaville Congo, where the Peking-backed Congolese National Liberation Committee has its Western headquarters. Formed by politicians loyal to the late Patrice Lumumba and imprisoned Antoine Gizenga, the rebel group is determined to carve up Adoula's tottering nation. Last week, in bucolic, mountainous Kivu province, where the Congo borders Rwanda and Burundi, the rebels were well on their...
...beginning to settle like old houses. More and more cracks show in the dramatic structure. The carpeting of ideas is faded, overfamiliar and, in spots, threadbare. Even the wit is surprisingly creaky: "Oh! You are an Englishman, are you?" "Certainly not, my lord: I am a gentleman." The ghost of Shaw haunts all the rooms, but his voice sounds more garrulous than eloquent, and he speaks with pedantry rather than passion...
Perhaps the play's greatest moment comes when Miss Tolentino, as Clytemnestra's ghost, stalks onto a stage where two large brown lumps lie. She howls, outraged that Orestes remains free, and the lumps dissolve into the avenging Furies, awakened and ready once again to seek the matricide's death. They are magnificently horrible, as frightening to the audience as they obviously are to Orestes...
Both white and Negro reactions are similar; whether, like both types of Anabaptists, they believe they are "civilized Christians" or "sheep for the slaughter." Both hear their Holy Ghost and are prone to irrationality and hysteria. Law and order have succumbed in the face of Negro protest; white Americans have beaten and killed, if they have not expelled Negroes. At one time, Negro protest was characterized by prayers and spirituals. Today, one is apt to see Negro demonstrators with clenched fists and to hear curse words. Thus, Negroes conceive and selfishly use "forms of power," such as the stall...
