...convey the subtleties of light and opacity Rauschenberg's method gives. The mix of forms is pale, apparitional and exquisite. This seems a long way from the declamatory harshness of his old combine paintings, but in fact, it pertains to a continuous theme of Rauschenberg's: ghost images, traces. The white paintings were made white to accept passing shadows. The De Kooning drawing was not erased to blank: a phantom of it stays on the paper. Rauschenberg's illustrations to Dante's Infer no (1960) were pale transfers from newsprint. But the Hoarfrost prints extend Rauschenberg...
Well into the December shopping season, it had looked as if the ghost of Christmas 1974 would be haunting merchants for many months to come. During the last full week of shopping before Christmas, nationwide sales were no better than even with the week before. What was worse, in an industry that has become accustomed to smashing year-to-year increases in holiday buying, sales were only 5% ahead of the same period in 1973-a decline in real terms when a 12% inflation rate is counted...
...Green Ghost. In the Ukrainian city of Donetsk (pop. 900,000), youthful would-be deejays adopted such sprightly call signs as "Buzz Saw," "Green Ghost," "Graveyard Goon," "Bullet Hole," "Spark of Love" and "The Invisible Man." The police were not amused. In an effort to make a clean sweep of the cluttered airways, 1,000 amateur Donetsk broadcasters-called "organ grinders" by the police-were arrested and fined 50 rubles ($69) for "violating rules governing the use of radio frequencies." There have been similar efforts to clamp down on underground broadcasts in other major cities...
Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond (who have collaborated on Some Like It Hot and The Apartment) give a friendly nod to Hecht's ghost by having Hildy speak of the time "Ben Hecht was leaving for Hollywood." But neither Hecht nor MacArthur could be expected to countenance what has been done to their original. Dialogue that should crackle like a telegraph has been slowed to the listless deliberation of a traffic cop writing out a ticket. Jack Lemmon makes a curiously enervated Hildy, and Walter Matthau's Burns is a shambling cynic too similar to his Odd Couple...
...GSAS's new tuition plan, which goes into effect next year, will attempt to eliminate what Peter S. McKinney, administrative dean of the GSAS, has called "the ghost problem," by requiring graduate students to register or to terminate their enrollment at the school...
