...case for an institutional mercy killing goes beyond the N.A.A.C.P.'s scandalous financial condition--though that alone is reason enough. In December seven members of the N.A.A.C.P.'s board of directors and its tax- exempt Special Contributions Fund filed a federal lawsuit alleging that chairman of the board William Gibson has ``caused or permitted'' more than $1.4 million of the organization's money to be squandered. Based largely on N.A.A.C.P. financial records leaked to syndicated columnist Carl Rowan, the suit contends that during Gibson's 10 years as chairman, he has run up $500,000 worth of charges...
...Gibson's angry denial of any misappropriation indicates how shoddily the N.A.A.C.P. has been managed. He says his American Express bills were sent directly to the organization's executive director, who did not ask for any written explanation of what N.A.A.C.P. business Gibson was conducting before authorizing payment. When asked why he did not provide such customary justification for his expenditures as a list of the people he was entertaining (in expensive restaurants, while traveling to various cities and riding about in limousines), Gibson replied, ``We have knowledge of who they were.'' Nobody else does...
Hollywood actors in need of a credibility infusion often turn to the instant image boost offered by performing in anything scripted by William Shakespeare. And how has he done? A London Sunday Times critic wrote...
Americans with Disabilities Act took effect in 1992, the number of unemployed disabled has grown. Whereas in 1992, 33% of disabled American men were either employed or actively seeking employment, for example, only 30% were in 1993. The number of employed disabled women also fell slightly. Says David Gibson, president of the firm that conducted the analysis: "ADA is not an affirmative action plan for the disabled. It is a law that defines how employers must accommodate disabled people once they are hired. Unfortunately, it is possible that ADA is now discouraging companies from hiring the disabled...
...government falls, national elections are likely within weeks -- unless a new coalition government emerges. Either way, Irish leaders were busy assuring the international press today that thepeace process in Ireland-- brought about to a large extent by Reynolds' efforts -- would continue. But, says TIME London reporter Helen Gibson, "it could slow it down because they will be busy dealing with internal politics."Post your opinion on theInternationalbulletin board...
