Professor Gibbs was graduated from Columbia in 1841. After receiving his degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, he pursued his studies at the University of Berlin, under Liebig at Giessen, and at the College of France at Paris. On his return to America he delivered lectures at Delaware College. From 1849 to 1863, he was professor of physics and chemistry at the College of the City of New York.
