...time watching Zero could ever be called wasted--he is our funniest actor, and when he is harnessed properly, one of our best. This Richard Lester movie comes close to using him correctly, and besides, it has three other extremely talented comedians working for it: Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford and a battered depleted Buster Keaton. It never gets into the high gear which is part of its promise, but like all of Lester's work, it has a disciplined rambunctiousness and a feeling of fresh air. He doesn't want his wife (Keeler) to find out about it, and he orders his lawyer (Bobby Van) to buy and bargain his way out of the mess. It all adds up to a kind of microminiature...
...face. He begs Doc Daneeka (Jack Gilford) to ground him as being insane with fear. But the flight surgeon dutifully recites the Air Force manual's imaginary Catch No. 22: Naturally, anyone who wants to get out of combat isn't really crazy. So supernaturally, anyone who says he is too crazy to keep flying is too sane to stop. On such circular reasoning rests the plot, the dialogue, and indeed the film's essence...
THREE MEN ON A HORSE. Jack Gilford plays Erwin, a composer of verses for greeting cards, and Sam Levene plays Patsy, the horseplayer, in this 1935 comedy. The cast is superb, and while the plot may contain no surprises, the entire production is polished to a high gloss...
