DIED. James Gilliam, 49, coach and former player for the Los Angeles Dodgers; following a stroke; in Inglewood, Calif. The Tennessee-born Gilliam joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1953, replacing Jackie Robinson at second base, and was celebrated as a "ballplayer's ballplayer" before turning into a player-coach in 1965 and a full-time coach two years later.
