"Great Escape"was full of the usual energy, and Bryan's fleet drumwork was more innovative than usual. The gimmick of a hyperactive, high-speed, truncated version of a song had failed miserably in my first show, in 1998, and it was a dud here on "Perfect." "All the Way Up to Heaven," with its Casio rhythm track and pre-recorded whistles, is a song that does not translate well...
...Still, it must be said, John Horatio Malkovich quickly becomes the heart of the film. We see the world through his eyes, and feel a little bit of the charge the characters get from experiencing real life in Malkovich's brain. The camera-eye gimmick goes on just long enough that we don't think that we'll really get to see John Malkovich himself, until all of a sudden he enters as another insane player in this mad roundelay. He all but overwhelms the movie with the question mark of his celebrity and the eerie charisma...
Such stories--and such hazel-eyed looks--are a publicist's dream, especially at a time when classical-record sales are chronically depressed and many labels are willing to resort to any gimmick, however fatuous, in order to score crossover hits.
