Last October Régine Cavagnoud, who won the super-G World Cup in 2001 and was third overall in the World Cup standings, died in a freak training accident on the Pitztal glacier, near Innsbruck. During a joint French and German team-practice session, the 31-year-old Cavagnoud was speeding down the ice at around 65 km/h when she crashed into German coach Markus Anwander. Both sustained head injuries, and Cavagnoud went into cardiac arrest. Two days later she died.
