...social progress. We are not ashamed to defend what we and the vast majority of Americans believe in--student aid, protection of our environment, care for our elders, the social safety net--from attacks by the cabal of right-wing extremists led by Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.). If Democrats fail to stand up for those not at the top, no one will...

...Hilley (soon to join the White House as its congressional liaison), kept CBO staff members working overtime trying to figure out how to squeeze in at least a teeny tax cut, which Clinton had promised. When Hilley had trouble getting the help he needed at CBO, it was actually Gingrich's staff that turned up the pressure on the exhausted number crunchers. This was because the Republicans also needed Clinton to endorse a CBO-approved plan, so they could claim they had got at least something out of him in return for what they considered their big cave...

...latest, perhaps final, chapter of the yearlong budget battle was written a week ago Saturday at a restaurant near the Treasury Department. For days Newt Gingrich had been stewing over how to make his best and final offer to Clinton. The Speaker had fought all year for the principle of a seven-year balanced budget; now he hoped to prove once and for all that he is capable of governing, not just breaking windows and upsetting the furniture in the House. JOHNSON CITY, TN: Calling President Clinton a "do-nothing liberal president who is not interested in passing the reforms the country wants," Newt Gingrich said Friday that Republicans have given up on negotiating a budget compromise with the White House. Next month the GOP will unleash a television ad campaign blaming Clinton for the breakdown. "We've now shifted gears," Gingrich said, in one of the more dramatic understatements of the week. At the White House, President Clinton maintained an upbeat tone, offering a new plan to eliminate the home sales tax and lower the top capital gains rate from...

WASHINGTON, D.C. "I cannot allow my fund-raising to be tied in any way to specific votes," freshman Rep. John Hostettler has defiantly told Newt Gingrich in a letter. The House Speaker had abruptly cancelled plans to attend a Hostettler fundraiser to punish the Indiana Republican, who had bucked Gingrich's emotional appeal to vote to end the federal shutdown two weeks ago. Gingrich later offered to reschedule the event, but Hostettler rebuffed him, saying, "I am today declining your unsolicited offer to attend a fundraiser in Southwestern Indiana to benefit my re-election." Not all is lost in this...
