...Martin who pushed hardest to sack Monica's acid-tongued malpractice lawyer, William Ginsburg, replacing him with Washington smoothies Plato Cacheris and Jake Stein, who had the trust of Ken Starr. But the family set one prerequisite for the new duo: Martin must sign off on each decision. So when Stein and Cacheris landed a nothing-to-lose offer from prosecutors to meet with Monica, the Lewinskys cleared it with their lesser-known lawyer. When prosecutors offered blanket immunity, Martin was again asked for his blessing. He credits Cacheris and Stein with the breakthrough: "You had to get them...

...same time, her room to maneuver disappeared in the public, hateful war her lawyer William Ginsburg had waged with Starr's office. He likened the prosecutors to storm troopers, animals, a "danger to the moral fabric of our society." In this light Monica was in a fight of good vs. evil; cooperating in any way with the investigation would itself be the worst sort of collaboration. From Starr's perspective, Ginsburg completely shredded Lewinsky's credibility without her saying a word; he implied that she had a foggy memory and a knack for fantasy, and had things in her past...

On June 2 they had their first meeting with Starr's team, conducted in total privacy, to convince the Starr camp that unlike the uncorkable Ginsburg, they were serious about doing this deal quietly and without publicity. ...great confidence builder. For the rest of us, it's reassuring to know that this procedure took place in New York rather than California, where Jones lives. If the surgery does happen to result in litigation, the medical-malpractice attorney who defends the surgeon would presumably not be William Ginsburg of Los Angeles. Seeing Ginsburg and Jones in a courtroom together would have made many of us feel that we're watching the last act of a very long play we hadn't intended to go to in the first place...

...attitude on the obstruction issue has softened in recent weeks. That's the main reason Starr has been unable to reach an immunity deal with Lewinsky's new lawyers, Plato Cacheris and Jake Stein. It's one thing to say an archantagonist like Lewinsky's ex-lawyer Bill Ginsburg couldn't cut a deal with Starr; but if pinstripes like Cacheris and Stein can't convince Starr that Lewinsky is offering all she knows, it would seem to put everyone in a very different dilemma...
