...work, cast in three movements, was performed without pause. Despite the contrasting tempi given for each movement (allegro, adagio con moto, allegro giocoso), there was little sense of actual formal differentiation--partly due to the tempo changes within a given movement, partly to the overall consistency, almost to a fault, of the instrumental texture. The texture was dominated by the churning lines of the strings, the quartet often moving in the same manner but isolated registrally. Added to this was the occasional punctuation and melodic quote announced by the remaining choirs of the orchestra, nearly always regulated to a marginal...

Even by the famously hot-blooded standards of opera, last week's passionate dramma giocoso at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City was positively -- well, operatic. In the fiery lead role was the mercurial lyric soprano Kathleen Battle, renowned for leaving a trail of ill will in her wake wherever she goes. Opposing her were the forces of decorum and rectitude, represented by Met general manager Joseph Volpe. The denouement was catastrophe. Kirchner's Brahms was even more impressive. From the very beginning of the great Fourth Symphony, the conductor proved himself a master of nuance, varying his tempos flexibly. The concluding Passacaglia, Allegro energico e passionato, was just that...

...years had dug up such old and new operas as Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona and Prokofiev's The Duenna (TIME, June 14, 1948), was scratching his head for a surprise for his 1949 season. A friend told him about Haydn's 172-year-old dramma giocoso II Mondo della Luna (The World of the Moon), wherein a charlatan astronomer and some frolicsome servants persuade a fat, foolish father to bless the marriage of his daughter to a poet by taking him on a trip to the moon. It sounded like fun, but the first problem...

...this year they may reach 60,000. And last week when 2,000 people gathered in Chicago for three conventions, the National Association of Music Merchants, the National Association of Sheet Music Dealers, the National Retail Musical Instrument Dealers Association, even the piano men began feeling allegro giocoso. President Edwin R. Weeks of the Music Merchants blithely buried the Jazz Age, declaring that "dreamy, tuneful melodies" are now the thing. President Robert A. Schmitt of the Sheet Music Dealers said: "People are singing again in family music groups. They have kicked out the 'Hotcha man.' They are playing the piano...
