...tremendous companies, but just as great as the problems of organization are those of obtaining capable executives. When Cyrus Stephen Eaton (no steelman) last week announced the final details of the merger between his steel companies, the head of the new Republic Steel Corp. was of course Tom Mercer Girdler whom, three months ago, he snatched from the presidency of Jones & Laughlin Steel (TIME, Nov. 4). Last week Jones & Laughlin announced that a man had been obtained to fill the Girdlerless post of presidency. He is George Gordon Crawford, who has been president of Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co., large...

This telegram agitated President Walter H. Girdler of the Helium Co., Louisville, Ky. In all the world he is the only private producer of commercial quantities of helium. The U. S. Government is his only competitor. The Government is also his major customer. Goodyear-Zeppelin Corp. buys some Girdler helium now for its blimps. Other minor helium uses are for incandescent lamps, food preservation, metallurgy, deep sea diving. The Government's buying surpasses all these...

Normally Mr. Girdler is an even-tempered gentleman. But what he considers injustice "raises his dander." Forthwith he last week fired a fusillade of protesting telegrams. Most significant were the brace which went to Kentucky's Senator Alben William Barkley and Representative Maurice Hudson Thatcher urging them instantly to remind President Hoover and Secretary Lamont of the Hoover opposition against Government competition with private business, to appeal for continued Government purchase and support of private helium...

...several shadows thrown before the Republic merger event was last month's (TIME, Nov. 4) resignation of Tom Mercer Girdler from the presidency of Jones & Laughlin, Pittsburgh's great "family" steel company. Last year Jones & Laughlin made Mr. Girdler president, having heard that the Eaton interests were negotiating with him, so that his departure from Jones & Laughlin indicated that Mr. Eaton had some large fish ready to fry. Mr. Girdler, who has spent nearly 30 years in various steel mills, swears vigorously and always keeps his hat on, to be ready for emergency calls...

Just what position Mr. Girdler will hold in the Eaton "interests" is as doubtful as what companies Mr. Eaton intends to put in the long-discussed super-steel-merger. Mr. Eaton, working with William Gwinn Mather and Otis & Co., sponsors of Continental Shares, Inc., is supposed to control enough steel companies to enable him to form a single unit that will challenge Bethlehem's position as second biggest U. S. producer. Until plans for this consolidation are completed, it is probable Mr. Girdler will advise the Eaton group on technical matters and stock activity. Chief companies with which...
