A Girl in Black is an Ibsenic study of what 19th century Europeans called "the woman question," and from the screen it breathes the musty atmosphere of a long-shut closet-the mid-Victorian kind with a skeleton in it. The main point Director Cacoyannis makes is that "respectable people" in Greece are still locked in the closet of 19th century manners and morals, and he seems to think it high time they broke...
