...play politics with a conservative Congress without seeming to do so; Taft had to temper Uncle Joe Cannon and was promptly accused of bowing to him. T. R.'s bouncing spirit rode the ground swell of the Progressive movement; Taft was too solid to bounce. His great girth, white walrus moustaches and booming chuckle made it easy for people to like him at first, just as easy for them to see him later as an affable pushover for Big Business...

...years of power Herr Hitler has probably changed less physically than do most men from 44 to 50. The lines in his face are only slightly deeper. He has added some 25 pounds to his weight and four inches to his girth, but that is much less than some of his lieutenants have gained. The early Hitler accent was typical of the Austrian civil service class into which he was born. Educated Austrians declare it had a Czech flavor. Now he has a more cultivated speech. His frock coat is spotless and lately pressed, although it no longer accomodates his increasing girth with the proper tailored case. If the warm spring breeze should rustle his coat tails the gardenia vendor on the opposite curb would notice that the back of the gentleman's trousers has a guilty sheen, but mercifully, there is no such mischievous breeze. The cab fare amounts to 75 cents, and the gentleman hands the driver a dollar. He is embarassed to hold...
