...late 19th Century, scientists were so puffed with the importance of their contemporary culture that discussion of prehistoric art remains discovered in Belgium and France, with their implication that a respectable culture had flourished in glacial times, was subtly but systematically suppressed. It was then held that Stone Age culture died when the ice receded northward for the last time. Leo Frobenius did not believe "anything so essentially alive could vanish so completely." He coaxed, cajoled and corn-pelled his elders to back his theory that Stone Age men had taken their chisels and paint brushes down into Africa after...

...mile thick lay over the Great Lakes region. The tremendous weight of this pressed down the earth, which is now springing back in desultory jerks. Last week's quakes were caused by upward jerks of this kind in northern Ohio. Seismologists declare that the recovery from glacial compression is not yet complete, expect it to continue but never to attain destructive violence. Father Joseph Lynch, S. J., of Fordham University guessed last week that rise & fall of the Ohio River flood may have accelerated the snap-back process. Father Joseph Sebastian Joliat, S. J., of Cleveland's John...

...pockmarked by sand and insects. Much bigger than the dinosaur eggs found in the Gobi by Explorer Roy Chapman Andrews, its shell is ⅛ in. thick, weighs 6 lb., must have weighed 24 lb. when the mother bird laid it. Aepyornis titan did not become extinct until after the Glacial Ages, which is almost yesterday as geological time goes. Little is known of its habits, except that it ate vegetable matter, probably snakes and lizards too. In Madagascar during the past century, several nearly complete skeletons and many fragments have been found. Scholars suspect that Aepyornis titan may have given...

Evidence indicated that Pekin Man was 500,000 to 1,000,000 years old, since he was found with remains of bear, deer, rhinoceros, hyenas and rodents of the early Glacial Age. He also appeared to be a cannibal especially fond of eating from the head, since the heads discovered seemed to have been severed from their trunks. No traces of tools or fire were discovered. The third and fourth skulls found this year were buried ten feet lower than the first two, were therefore considered to be more ancient. To Dr. Weidenreich's delight, they were both mature...

...University of Southern California's anthropology department, pronounced it that of a 70-year-old woman with a long, narrow head. Dr. Bowden stated that the skull could not possibly be an "intrusion" since it was under a 13-ft. deposit of clay, referred it definitely to glacial times, put its age tentatively at 30,000 years. "The Ballona Woman," he wrote, "gives a more conclusive proof than any yet found of very early prehistoric man in America." He found remains of a Pleistocene elephant nearby...
