Rarely had the stakes in a labor strike been higher. After 17 exhausting months of glacial negotiations with management, rank-and-file union members at Eastern decided to strike despite the risk that they might force the 60-year- old carrier to go belly up -- and lose Eastern's 31,200 jobs in the process. For Lorenzo, the intense chairman of Eastern's parent firm, Texas Air, the prospects were no better: the nation's seventh largest airline was clearly in for a bone-jarring ride, huge financial losses and a very uncertain landing...

...replace Botha. Party leader of the populous Transvaal province and Education Minister in Botha's Cabinet, De Klerk has been heir apparent for the past seven years. He is a conservative and an apartheid advocate, a younger, more articulate version of P.W. Botha and, like him, happy with a glacial pace of "reform" that nonetheless maintains minority white control...

...plays rely on the lightning speed of witty repartee, which is rapid even for the British stage. Indeed, a quick pace seems to pervade the characters' every action. Any honest talk about sacrifice or yielding self-interest to the common interest is as politically dubious as repeating Jimmy Carter's malaise speech. During the primaries, candidates of both parties who tried cold candor encountered glacial resistance. Reagan has redefined the presidency into a cheerful con game that works best when the man in the Oval Office believes his own upbeat patter...

...physicists reached their conclusion as the result of an experiment conducted in Greenland last summer. They lowered a supersensitive gravity meter into a mile-deep hole bored in glacial ice -- chosen because its density is more uniform than that of rock -- and monitored the gravitational pull as the meter descended. What occurred was startling: the expected increase in gravitational force predicted by Newton was there, but it got stronger faster than expected. Either something was enhancing the force of gravity or the researchers had come upon a heretofore unknown, far more complex working of gravity itself. Or, just possibly, they...
