Boarding a plane these days is like getting on a bus--without the glamour. Meals have been reduced to peanuts and soda, pillows plucked from under our heads, the warmth of flying gone with the blankets. The industry's perennial woes--high fuel, labor and capital costs--have led to a traveler's hell of airport fees, climbing fares, flight delays and abysmal service...
...year dizzy spell? Easy. Take the sport's most talented fighter, Floyd Mayweather Jr., 30, a self-described "hustler" who was nearly gunned down as a baby and is, kindly, referred to by one promoter as "a huge pain in the ass." Pit him against the sport's last glamour boy, Oscar De La Hoya, 34, bred tough in East L.A. but now a clean-cut corporate sweetheart whose broad, boyish smile has made millions swoon into his corner. Naturally, his charm has also turned off others who would love a guy like Mayweather to coldcock that grin...
...Berry has a problem, it lies in the material she and her management choose for her - lots of high-glamour and action showcases, not enough hard-core reality of the kind that brought her an Academy Award in Monster's Ball. Perfect Stranger represents the nadir in this line of thinking. There is also nothing more offensive than the motivation du jour of partially repressed horrific memories - especially in pictures that glow with glamour-trash aspirations. For that aspect of the story, Rowena gets a job in Hill's agency, which permits her to wear swell clothes, go to fancy parties and engage in flirtatious dialogue about "Hemingway Daiquiris" with Hill, who, his priapic ways aside, seems to be a nice enough...
...movie Stranger Than Fiction. When a writer convinced her that the character played by Emma Thompson had to smoke, Doran relented, but from the way Thompson hacks her way through the film and snuffs out her cigarettes in a palmful of spit, it's clear the glamour's gone. And remember all the smoking in The Devil Wears Prada? No? That's because the producers of that film kept it out entirely--even in a story that travels from the U.S. fashion world to Paris, two of the most tobacco-happy places on earth. "No one smoked in that movie...
