...like to be tax free. Apart from its glamour (the same reason celebrities get good tables at fancy restaurants), why should the Internet enjoy this advantage? The usual answer is that there are 30,000 different taxing jurisdictions in the U.S., and the diffuse nature of cyberspace makes Internet commerce uniquely vulnerable to conflicting and overlapping tax claims. But the nightmare scenarios are nothing new. Ask General Motors or Federal Express if 50 states and thousands of counties and cities add up to a picnic for them. The mail-order houses used to insist, until last week, that collecting...
Fleming, 38, is not the only contemporary classical singer to upend those stereotypes--Dawn Upshaw and Anne Sofie von Otter are also known for being good colleagues, devoted mothers and accomplished pop singers--but she may be the first to combine postfeminist independence with old-fashioned glamour. In person, Fleming comes across as cheerful and unassuming; onstage, she is one of the most vividly expressive personalities ever to take an opera-house curtain call. Appearing this fall in the Met's production of Manon, she bewitched audiences and critics alike with her compelling portrayal of the title character, a teenage...
Ever since supporters pushed for George Washington to take a permanent political position in the uncertain years after the Revolution, the U.S. has had a love-hate relationship with the idea of monarchy. Would it have been better for George Washington to have taken the crown of the U.S., and would that have actually supported the U.S.'s need for a democratic government...
Yesterday, we made an attempt to enter the restricted world of glamour. Dartboard journeyed into Boston to visit with our stylist for our periodic haircut. Dartboard was rather excited. It's a win-win situation--we always leave looking better than when we came in. We don't always leave feeling better though. The initial attempt to sell us a $40 anti-frizz treatment we brushed off as an attempt to sell us unnecessary services. The allusion to our youthfulness didn't ruffle our feathers. We took the remark about our stodginess in terms of hair style in stride...
...really act? This is an oft debated question to which, as with that of nature vs. nurture, it is hard to give a definitive answer. Despite a career forged in nepotism--90210 is dad's show--Spelling has endured, projecting an odd combination of goofy sincerity and trashy glamour that has also carried a string of popular movies-of-the-week. Is this skill? Or her luck in having an arresting face, pretty yet shovel-like (she cops only to a nose job)? Whatever one thinks of such fare as Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?, her longevity...
