Lopsided Orbit. Usually obscured by the bright glare of the sun, Mercury remains almost as much a mystery as the most distant planet, Pluto. Half again as large as the moon, Mercury may be almost twice as dense. Traveling in a lopsided orbit, it comes as close to the sun as 29 million miles, then sweeps as far away as 43 million miles. To anyone standing on Mercury's surface, the sun would seem to stand still at times, then move backward briefly, in the Mercurian sky. Another oddity: Mercury's trip around the sun takes 88 earth...
...m.p.h. gale is blowing in a blinding sheet of snow. The seas are pounding in 15-ft. waves, and all sensible fishermen have long since headed for port. But here, in the glare of arc lamps, heavily clothed figures are wrestling with craneloads of drill casings, dancing about on the slippery, freezing deck like madmen. Arriving at his host's small farmhouse, he was welcomed in the harsh glare of TV floodlights. He slipped past the crowd of reporters, photographers, local police, neighbors and gawkers. "I was in prison just this morning," he said...
December 9 was a hard sunny day in Detroit, the sort of day that is neither fall nor winter but all crispness and cutting surface glare, when the cars seem to float across the vision and the long cold winter looks like it will never come. A young black man emptied two pistols through the window of a house on Grand River killing both his mother and his sister. A man in a Santa Claus outfit was robbed and beaten in the alley behind downtown Hudson's by a gang of four teenage boys. A fifty-year-old man crashed...
