...time relapse of 145 years. The Wood subaudible note was "sounded," or more accurately, turned on. I was reminded years later of the effect by the sound from the bowels of the earth that yet was no sound, that preceded the big shock of the Los Angeles earthquake. The glass in every chandelier in the old Lyric commenced to tinkle softly, the opaque windows in the balcony all rattled gently. And the wave of fear, according to shaken witnesses afterwards, seemed to sweep over them, not from the stage, as my plans demanded, but from the opposite direction, from outside...
...January morning Investigator Raymond stepped into his car, touched the starter, was blown out of his garage by a crude pipe bomb wired under the hood. Investigator Raymond, who recovered after 150 pieces of steel and glass had been picked out of him, had much to tell his old friends on the homicide squad. Investigator Raymond and Lawyer Rose had been digging into the connections between the Shaw administration and the city's biggest gamblers. Some of these, according to witnesses Lawyer Rose put on the stand, had given Harry Munson-henchman and onetime campaign manager of Mayor Frank...
...months' ambassadorship in Moscow. Most unusual feature of the farewells was a two-hour talk (subjects unrevealed) with Dictator Stalin himself. Some years ago a scientist walked out into a Baltimore park to take a picture. His fertile brain and nimble hands had produced a "fisheye lens," a hollow hemisphere of glass filled with liquid, which would focus a sweep of 180° on one plate. He decided to place himself beneath a bridge, photograph the underside of the bridge's arch from horizon to horizon. By the time he had finished setting up his mysterious-looking device, he had attracted a large crowd of gawpers. He snapped his picture, looked up with an expression of horror, cried...
Splitting Light. The important work which Robert Williams Wood is now doing is the manufacture of diffraction gratings. A diffraction grating is a plate of glass, metal or metal-on-glass on which a series of very fine, parallel lines are ruled close together. In combination with lenses, such a grating breaks up a beam of mixed light, such as the light from a star, into its component wave lengths-that is, it furnishes, as a prism does, a spectrum of bright and dark lines which identify the fundamental elements of matter. The iridescence of mother-of-pearl...
