Its small-plates menu includes clever interpretations of traditional dishes; try Ramsay's BLT - bacon and onion cream, chilled lettuce velouté and tomato gelée in a martini glass. Come to think of it, it's a good metaphor for the hotel - a playful, beautiful twist on the time-honored. In other words, it's very London. www.thelondonnyc.com

...open, and the boy with eyes like cracked ice thrust in his fluttering and clutching hand, like a child reaching into a cave, aggressively curious but half-afraid the hand might be bitten by something in the dark. Roll it up: the hand withdrew before being caught by the glass. All the faces pressed up against the windows now (a nightmare through a fish-eye lens), and the fists beat harder on hood and roof and windshield, in a taunting, accelerating cadence: boom -- -- boom -- boom-boom-boomboomboom boom. ...today about the strip is its sanctified sadomasochism. No question, Tracy could dish it out, as in this sequence from 1947: "Like a whip, a piece of chain flies through the air - a chain attached to Tracy's cane handle. AGAIN AND AGAIN, the chain slashes! Tiny pieces of glass fly through the air." More often, though, Tracy was on the receiving end of the mayhem...
