...minimalist set contributes to Machinal's ambiguity. The space in the Loeb Ex space is incredibly intimate and close to the audience, yet the careful use of grays and silvers by Glenn Reisch '00 creates a sense of sterility. Hanging from the ceiling are square, metal mobiles with twisted coils, contributing to the sensation that human feeling can only be repressed for so long, just as the metal coils may snap at any time. Throughout the show, the set remains a reconfiguration of five sliver boxes reminiscent of the inside of a combustion engine, a few gray and silver wood...

...addition to accurately describing a life, biographies give the reader a chance to get into some famous person's head. Two current bestsellers probably owe their success to this phenomenon: When Pride Still Mattered, the story of Hall of Fame Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, and John Glenn: A Memoir, the life of the former Mercury astronaut and former senator. McGee to get the board to reduce the expulsions from two years to one and to let the youths enroll in an alternative-education program. The board has not agreed to McGee's proposal, which Jackson supports, that they consider re-admitting the boys midway through the year if their performance in alternative school demonstrates that they've learned their lesson. To make matters worse, the local prosecutor overreacted, getting four of the boys indicted for "mob action," a felony. Jackson fired back by urging...

...complicated role of John Halder. The professional expertise is also apparent in Daniel Gidron's effective directing, although the efforts of student assistant director, stage managers, and producers, should be noted for their contributions to this extremely mature production. Especially effective is the sparse yet elegant set design of Glenn Reisch '00. Chairs, stairs, and banners form an aesthetically pleasing backdrop...
