Somewhat jaded and severe, Marsh can be an unlikable character in less capable hands, but Roach hits the exact note of susceptibility to keep his character appealing and interesting. ...Behind the glitz, however, is a solid and reasonably full account of Lincoln's life and achievements, with an admirably nuanced examination of the agonizing politics involved in emancipating the slaves.
