...conjectures advanced as to the probable nature of the cluster, Shapley said the evidence so far favors the assumption that the stars may have an absolute magnitude of -1.5, comparable to that of the brightest stars in the globular star clusters. If that is the case, it can be definitely established only when variable stars have been found in the group, then the cluster would be about 250,000 light years from the earth, and would measure about 6,500 light years in diameter...

...last fortnight at Nottingham (TIME, Sept. 13), and concluded its sessions last week, tidy, calm-browed Dr. Dorothy M. Wrinch of Oxford described her latest discoveries about the architecture of molecules. She showed a model of protein molecules which she had built after working them out mathematically. One typical globular molecule looked like a crocheted doily cut up and sewed together in a three-dimensional geometrical object. This she described as a "polyhexagonal lacelike pattern of atoms with the characteristic lacunae or holes, the whole forming a truncated tetrahedron, a cage-like space enclosing a structure roughly resembling...

...August 12, the first definitive proof that the solar corona is not made up chiefly of flaming coronal streamers alone, as has been supposed, but is an even, globular blanket covering the sun more than a million miles deep, was revealed by a conference of astronomers at Harvard Observatory...

...usual familiar coronal streamers, which have completely dominated eclipse photographs taken from the ground, and which have absorbed most of the scientific attention up to now, appear on the new plates as relatively insignificant bright tracery in the immense globular envelope...

Guided by their new knowledge of the globular corona, the astronomers checked back and found that the phenomena was recorded on the Harvard totality photographs of last year, although by no means as clearly as on the stratosphere photographs. Earlier indications of the globular form of the corona had been obtained by the European astronomers Bergstrand and von Klueber, but the full appreciation of the nature of the corona was not reached until Major Stevens' photographs brought out the phenomenon more clearly than heretofore...
