Roberts manages to depict the war realistically and beautifully, reminding us that actions have consequences, that war and death are often far less glorious than propaganda would have them be. The official canon largely skirted the implications of war, preferring a simplified tale of good vs. evil. Roberts refuses to shy from describing the realities, from reluctant soldiers and simple pragmatists to heroes wracked with self-doubt and pity...
