...fuss about? An hour-long raunch fest that was part slapstick comedy, part carnal carnival: it's a burlesque routine (Reems as a doctor, wisecracking like Groucho Marx) wrapped around a sideshow freak stunt (Lovelace's bedroom trick of controlling her gag reflex so she could perform glottal fellatio - a glo-job). "You had to be there," he said in Inside Deep Throat. "I'm thrilled that I was there. And I thank God I had a camera." Damiano gave this movie the tone of a mildly bright comedy, with an underscoring full of broadly ironic pop music, including...

...Linda's routine). And the movie -maybe all of porno chic -wouldn't exist if Chuck Traynor hadn't shown Damiano a bedroom trick his wife Linda could do. Which, putting it starkly, was to work a penis not only into her mouth but down her throat. Call it glottal fellatio...

...Bang the Drum Slowly, about her late father, or the title tune, about a childhood friend with a run of bad luck ("One thing they don't tell you 'bout the blues when you got 'em/ You keep on fallin' 'cause there ain't no bottom"). Her glottal throb on these dozen tunes purifies the funereal sentiments; it's as if the lines on a condolence card were raised to a kind of folk...

There is a hint of girlishness in the choice of some lightweight material on the album (MCG/ Curb), and her singing sometimes is closer to the full-throttle glottal attack of Brenda Lee, a precocious stylist of the Cline years, than to Patsy herself. That's O.K., though--Rimes, who turns 14 later this month, is still a work in progress. Her voice already works handsomely...
