...subtitled Heaven Will Not Protect the Working Girl. The young heroine, Marianne (Carol Kane), works in her father's toy-soldier shop. The father (Robert Burr) affiances her to a middle-aged butcher friend (Clarence Felder). She balks at the match, runs off with a feckless horseplayer (John Glover) and eventually winds up doing nude tableaux in a cabaret. At play's end there are several reconciliations, all of them more bitter than sweet...
...Light Touch. The film's only flair comes from Director Lamont Johnson, who tries to force-feed sophistication into the proceedings. Johnson has shot the film at a fast pace in romantic Manhattan locations, and he has recruited outstanding stage actors, notably John Wood and John Glover, for the secondary roles. He provides at least the illusion of slickness...
...outlandish elements of the play: its baby found in a handbag, its imperious dowager, Lady Bracknell (Elizabeth Wilson), who is "a monster with out being a myth, its one young man, John Worthing (James Valentine), who invents a dissolute brother, and its other young man, Algernon Moncrieff (John Glover), who blithely proceeds to impersonate him. This is farce walking the tightrope of absurdity. But it is also farce at its most urbane - as insolently monocled in manner as it is killingly high-toned in language...
