...film, is so original that one immediately realizes that one is in the hands of a master. It always seems to be late afternoon in the film, that lazy peculiarly Southern California lighting, or else it is a misty night. The surfaces are always reflected in some gas-lit glow--a shadow of the "real" California of travel posters and television shows. Director Ivan Passer has given his characters enough personalities to be interesting (Cutter is constantly mimicking Ahab), but more often than not he resists making them fit together too neatly...
...dealership has been opened extra late to accomodate crowds. Inside you can hear Elvis doing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" over the Delco system. Another one of those haunted Civil War songs. One by one the flourescent lights go out. There's a weird orange sodium vapor lamp glow over the city ten miles away. The cicadas are going crazy in the heat. It is terribly still and terribly wide open. There's been a bag lady outside the window all night, and everyone's been making fun of her. God knows how she got out here...
...forward manner betrays a touch of bluster, but Hamlin's combination of complete honesty and friendliness precludes any arrogance. You get a pleasant glow after talking with him, regardless of whether you agree with him on politics (as the conservative club's vice president, he burned a Soviet flag on the steps of Memorial Church to protest the massing of troops near Poland), the military (he loves it, though he hates war, favors nuclear disarmament, and thinks part of the defense budget "should be allocated to building tables around which we can talk reasonably with the Russians") or general outlook...
...commercials. Those ads are splendidly mythic playlets, romantic idealizations of men in groups who blast through mountains or pour plumingly molten steel in factories, the work all grit and grin. Then they retire to flip around iced cans of sacramental beer and debrief one another in a warm sundown glow of accomplishment. As for Reagan, in his presidential campaign he enshrined work in his rhetorical "community of values," along with family, neighborhood, peace and freedom. He won by a landslide...
...revival (same show, same seat) costs $30 on a Saturday night. Taking a cab from Times Square to the elegant Plaza Hotel would have cost 60? in 1953, but today it is about $2.20, without traffic jams-or tip. Once at the Plaza, French pastries in the glow of the crystal hurricane lamps of the Palm Court come dear: $3.95 per gâteau, vs. $1.90. To top off the evening in the best romantic tradition, a horse-and-carriage ride in Central Park is now around $20, instead...
