...Kill Me is its unique tone. The script by Christopher Marker and Stephen McFeely (who number the rather different Chronicles of Narnia among their credits) is not one that goes for big laughs. It offers, instead, a steady mutter of eccentric situations and, better still, a whole bunch of glum and occasionally desperate characters whose depressive natures are hinted at but never boringly explicated. They appear and disappear rather casually in the story, which the director John Dahl (Red Rock West, The Last Seduction) paces expertly. His film moves not with the speed of light, but the speed of life...

...soft turf being stripped away in search of solid ground on which to build the Ballinaboy refinery, a handful of campaigners huddle nearby in a converted horse trailer, fortifying themselves with hot tea, iced buns and buttered fruit loaf. At the gates a few gardai stand around looking glum and bored, with a wistful eye perhaps on their colleagues in the warm, dry police van parked nearby. The arrival of a reporter and a photographer produces a flurry of activity. When a dozen or so protesters make for the gates, the police take their positions for the well-rehearsed daily...

...Conservatives do have reason to feel glum. But it's not because Romney once backed abortion or McCain supports campaign finance reform. It's because virtually their entire movement (along with some hawkish liberals like me) endorsed a catastrophic war. That's the reason conservatives are having so much trouble getting excited about a candidate in 2008. And they have no one to blame but themselves...
