...absolutely asinine. It only takes one team to have the wherewithal with that player, and then that player and his representatives think 'Well, this is what the market value is.' It's crazy, and so is that level of compensation." Was Schuerholz, who will relinquish his GM duties but stay on as Atlanta's team president, just taking a parting shot at Rodriguez? Or was he sending his colleagues a not-so-subtle signal to stick it to A-Rod? At least one National League GM, who did not want to be identified, expressed support for Schuerholz's sentiments...
...Easy Going Green The article "Green Motors" was more fantasy than reality [Oct. 22]. GM, like the other American car manufacturers, misread the market, and foreign car manufacturers have filled the void. I remember when President Jimmy Carter first took office and called a meeting of the major American carmakers to tell them we needed small, fuel-efficient cars. Last Friday at the 2007 Career Forum, as students and recruiters exchanged monotonic pleasantries inside the Gordon Track and Tennis Center, one high-pitched noise rose above the din. “Woohoo!” The Pillsbury Doughboy stood in front of the General Mills (GM) table , instantly recognizable in its white chef’s hat and expansive stomach—sure enough, the Doughboy responded to FM’s poke with a squeal of irrepressible glee. Emily S. High ’06, a marketing associate at GM, stood calmly by while the Doughboy began shimmying...
