Microsoft is famous for getting software right on the second or third go-round, and this year marks the second try for its Windows XP Media Center Edition. When it debuted last year, Media Center was the first PC system nongeeks could operate like a combination TiVo--DVD player--music jukebox. This year's update enhances the photo slide show and adds a radio tuner. Better yet are two movie-download services and a program that lets you burn DVDs by using just the remote control. The user interface could still be improved, but with living-room-friendly PCs coming...
...troubling escalation. The U.S., which last year assisted the Philippine army's efforts to eliminate Abu Sayyaf guerrillas on the southern island of Basilan, will soon send 1,700 troops back to the region, including 350 members of the special forces, to help finish the job. But this go-round they'll be on the island of Jolo, a far more lawless place, and unlike last year, the Pentagon says American soldiers will take part in combat missions. "Continental 9990, do you need to fly all your patterns that wide?" drawls the controller. "Uh, no," responds Bethune, laughing. After the next go-round, he retreats to the cabin...
That's right, courts and universities are at each other's throats, and once again the issue is race. If you are old enough to remember black-and-white TV, you saw the footage the last go-round: federal judges ordering all-white universities in the South to open their doors to blacks. But in the new millennium, the sides have flipped. Now the schools are the ones trying to usher in minority students with broad affirmative-action policies. And the courts--and, in California, voters and the regents--have been striking down those policies...
