Textiles. Commerce Secretary Maurice Stans reported on his mission to goad Asian trading partners, chiefly Japan, into restraining their textile exports. The outcome: no deal. Japan sends nearly $400 million worth of textiles yearly to the U.S., and this has sorely hurt whole towns in the South. They live off their textile mills, which employ many unskilled Negroes...
...peace. As the Air Force had it, the massive U.S. bombardment of North Viet Nam would crack that nation's morale. It achieved the opposite result: by putting everyone in the front lines, the bombing created a spirit of defiance. But, as the theory goes, without the unifying goad of bombs, the hard-pressed peasants now have the leisure to reflect on their privations. As evidence, the monitors of Hanoi's newspapers and broadcasts report frequent condemnation of apathy and general slackness. There is also the tremendous death toll on the battlefield. In an interview with Italian Journalist...
...system thrives because it combines the incentive of personal ownership-the best goad man has yet devised to spur hard work-with the managerial talents of big business. For a fee (average: 3.8% of receipts), the typical franchise operative buys professional expertise he could otherwise scarcely afford-notably, cost controls, promotion and buying advice, and tested operating methods. The main advantage for the parent company is that franchising enables it to expand while putting up little of its own capital...

Unfortunately, stilted direction robs this off-Broadway production of rightful humor, and the actors seem to admire the play without enjoying it. The translation into English is somewhat awkward...
...spent most of his 84 years tugging at America's lapels, beseeching it to share his vision of better things. Goad and gadfly to his country's conscience, he espoused a variety of socialism that was questioning rather than doctrinaire, Christian rather than Marxist, democratic rather than totalitarian. Much of what he sought in social welfare legislation was eventually adopted by those who once recoiled from his proposals. "The ultimate token of approval," he said with rueful satisfaction, "is that the Democrats and Republicans have stolen my thunder." Son of a Presbyterian minister, valedictorian of Princeton...
