This year's festivities were no different from any other--the live chicken tied to the goalpost between periods, the effigies, the chants, the sieves, and finally, as the Crimson took the ice to begin the final period, the combined output of Lake Cayuga and ponds beyond flying out of the stands, aimed at the hated Crimson jerseys. Pretty funny...
Rivalry. Intense, that's what it is. In the 1970s, the Harvard-Yale football rivalry was just that, with each side leaving the decade with five wins and no 29-all ties. There were blow-outs, there were cliff-hangers, there were goalpost-rippers. There were upsets, there were upset stomachs. There were nobodies and there were stars. Harvard's Richie Szaro, Danny Jiggets and Pat McInally and Yale's Dick Jauron and Gary Fencik, all of whom went on to play in the pros, plus Eric "End Zone" Crone, Teddy DeMars, Larry Brown, Bob Rizzo, Stone Phillips...
Just prior to the St. Louis tally, Gregg almost put the ball in the net and herself out of commission, when she met the ball, the goalpost and Polar Bear goaltender Cathy Leitch all at the same time. Both players were shaken up a bit, and Gregg sustained a minor shoulder injury, but stayed in the game to register the Crimson's second goal...
...Lynah Hall masses stuck to minnows for this year's between-periods floor show (although they did perform the fabled tie-the-chicken-to-the-goalpost routine for the umpteenth year), and the Big Red stuck to its potent passing offense in the third.
