...Gyron is an axial-flow engine, intended for use in supersonic aircraft, while all De Havilland's previous jets (e.g., the Goblin, which powers the Vampire fighter, and the Ghost, which powers the Comet and the Venom fighter), have been centrifugal types.* De Havilland said that the engine, which has low gas consumption and a low ratio of weight to thrust, is being developed first for supersonic fighter planes, later could be built for transports. Said De Havilland: the Gyron is the first of "a new generation of really large turbine-jet power units. The company is confident that...

Harry Partch is a composer who has most of his critics completely flummoxed: Does he write goblin music, or is he an advance-guard genius? Now 50, California-born Composer Partch decided some 30 years ago that twelve tones to the octave were just not enough for his purposes. He constructed a mathematically more perfect scale of 43 tones; working mostly under University of Wisconsin and Guggenheim grants and fellowships, he also invented instruments capable of playing his 43-tone music. Their brother Austin married Susan, their school girl friend, a tavernkeeper's daughter. Susan soon became involved in a lifelong feud with sister-in-law Lavinia...

Finn MacCool was first & foremost a fighter (he killed Aillin, a goblin who was annoying Ireland) but he also took a little exercise for fun. He could outrun a hare or stag, and he could wing a wild duck with the first stone from his sling. He could jump the width of Ireland (115 miles) in three "leps." Finn once licked two hurling teams singlehanded. They ganged up on him (as hurling players still do) but he killed seven and chased the rest away. Next day he found them swimming. They dared him to come in. Finn drowned them...
