Daughter of a construction worker and a schoolteacher, Hufstedler earned a bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of New Mexico ('45) in 2½ years. She worked briefly as secretary to Stars Paulette Goddard and Burgess Meredith, then enrolled at Stanford Law School, where she graduated tenth in her class ('49) and married the man who graduated No. 1, Seth Hufstedler. She practiced general civil law in Los Angeles until 1961, when Governor Edmund G. ("Pat") Brown named her a Los Angeles County superior court judge. In 1966 he promoted her to the California...
...centennial of Edison's great achievement comes at a time when American innovative genius, so well personified by Edison, has begun to fade. The nation that produced Robert Fulton, Robert Goddard, Edmund Land and many others now has far fewer folk-hero tinkerers. Laments James G. Cook, president of the Thomas Alva Edison Foundation: "Over the past decade, America has been losing its traditional leadership in technological innovation. Robert Jastrow, director of NASA'S Goddard Institute for Space Studies, has published a small and curious book called God and the Astronomers, in which he suggests that the Bible was right after all, and that people of his own kind, scientists and agnostics, by his description, now find themselves confounded. Jastrow blows phantom kisses like neutrinos across the chasm between science and religion, seeming almost wistful to make a connection. Biblical fundamentalists may be happier with Jastrow's books than are his fellow scientists. He writes operatically: "For the scientist who has lived...
