...Hindu gods-exactly the opposite of what Moses had in mind. In the climactic Resurrection scene, Jesus joins Elijah, Mohammed, Buddha and Shiva in ascending the stage's tiers toward God. Yet for Christians (presumably even for New York Episcopalians), Jesus is thought to be part of the Godhead. To Hindus, Shiva the Destroyer-Restorer is one of the greatest of gods. Odd company indeed for Mohammed, a prophet who never considered himself to be more than a mere human. For Americanized Sufis, of course, such matters are rationalist nitpicking...
...myth: Eve took the bite and mankind got its eviction notice from Paradise. The second is baked in its own apocryphal jacket: Isaac Newton got his deep insight into gravity when struck by a falling fruit. Result: a new brand of physics that relocated us even farther from the godhead-and a reverse anthropomorphism that saw the human body as a machine. Today Adam Smith implies the West has an urge to work its way back, past technology, past sin itself...
...learned the news: a self-proclaimed witch was in the prison. He was not a convict but Robert J. Williams, 45, one of the three staff psychologists. Williams is a member of what he calls the Gardnerian sect, an occult paganistic group that worships a two-headed, male-female godhead and performs some of its ceremonies in the nude (and refers to both male and female mem bers as witches). After the Wichita Eagle and the Beacon ran the story last November, Superintendent Kenneth Oliver was not exactly bewitched by the revelation. He fired Williams, arguing that the psychologist...
...side of the civil libertarians. Intrinsic to most censorship arguments is the supposition that the putative censors are morally superior to pornography's patrons. It is a form of elitism, as dogmatic and offensive as a religious sect which insists that it alone possesses the sole pathway to the Godhead...
Besides La Vey's well-publicized group, there are some quasi-Satanists in the public eye. The Process Church of the Final Judgment (TIME, Sept. 6) includes Satan in its Godhead along with Christ, Jehovah and Lucifer (who is seen as a separate divinity), though it has been playing down Satan lately and emphasizing Christ. But the darker, more malevolent Satanists give only rare and tantalizing hints of their existence, and none at all of their numbers ?probably for good reason. Sociologist Marcello Truzzi of Florida's New College at Sarasota observes that one variety of this underground Satanism...
