Must Catholics be conscientious objectors, since U.S. defense depends on "immoral" deterrence? What about the moral implications of succumbing to the evil rule of a godless dictator? Could a Catholic President seriously take the oath of office to protect the U.S. from foreign attacks? Our bishops must not leave millions of Catholics in this moral dilemma. We have heard their objection to our defense system and are now awaiting realistic alternatives...

The reason, as a Tudeh member now in jail puts it, was that "Moscow perceived the clergy as incorrigible reactionaries." Those fears were well founded. Right-wing clergymen routinely reviled the Soviets as godless Communists, while Khomeini opposed the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. During occupation periods, the Catholic Church kept Polish language and culture alive and served as the main bastion of nationalism. After the 0 Communist takeover in 1945, the church provided a unique alternative to a "godless" Marxist regime. Going to Mass became not only a religious act but a quiet sign of rebellion against the state. Today, 75% to 80% of Poland's 36 million people are practicing Catholics. A deeply religious man, Walesa always wears on his lapel a badge depicting the so-called Black...
