...Tragic Hour." There was no scorn in the reports of one expression of desire for peace. All week from Rome came stories that the Pope would propose a general conference, hoping to create a Catholic Polish buffer state between godless Russia and pagan Germany. But no proposal came. Instead, at ten o'clock one morning last week, before the Polish Ambassador, the Polish Primate and a large audience of Polish priests and nuns, the Pope walked to the throne in the Pontifical Palace of Castel Gandolfo, to offer words of consolation to "his children of Catholic Poland" in this...

...they "deny and resent" such rumors. True it was that austere, saintly Pius XII was shocked and grieved by the destruction of Catholic Poland, whose Primate, Augustus Cardinal Hlond, arrived at the Vatican during the week. The Pope was profoundly apprehensive of the future of eastern Poland, occupied by godless Russians. But, said a Vatican voice, "even if the Pope fasted and performed self-mortification, he would not be the man to flaunt it in public. ...with the efficiency experts and barking generals sent among them by A. Hitler to improve their working and fighting. Hitler's deal with Stalin affronted Fascism, despite feverish rationalizations (TIME, Sept. 4). Italy would not have Spain, now, to hamper France's rear. ...London last autumn the World Union of Freethinkers held a convention (TIME, Sept. 19). Scareheaded by some religious papers as a "Godless Congress," the milk-mild meeting piqued Soviet Russian Godless leaders because it was not nearly atheistic enough. Last week a long article in Antireligioznik, Soviet Godless journal, analyzed the meeting's skimmed milk. Its complaint: because of the "Protestant mentality" of the London delegates, too much attention was paid to the "danger of the Vatican. . . . The reactionary role of other religions was insufficiently illustrated, as all are equally harmful...

Russia, in popular estimation, remained during 1938 the world's No. 1 Godless State. Russia's policy has long been to tolerate religion, and even to maintain, for propaganda purposes, certain puppet churchmen, so long as it appeared that there were people who wished the church's ministrations. To many Christians there has been some encouragement in the fact that Russia's League of Militant Godless, whose work the Government approves, has continued to fare not very well. Last spring the Government jailed a good many Orthodox prelates in what was heralded as a new drive...
