...three sets of three kids, playing Jamal, Salim and Latika at different ages--are all Indian (though Patel was born and raised in Britain). Even if redemption awaits Jamal, the violence he and Salim witness, or perpetrate, is as gritty as that in the Brazilian urban classic City of God (2002). And with a third of its dialogue in Hindi, Slumdog would come closer than any top Oscar winner has to being a foreign-language film...
...creativity isn't the problem in places like this gorgeous, wind-strafed corner of Minnesota, where clergy are trying out several innovative ways to keep God in the heartland. The fertile, Scandinavian-settled farm towns in the Red River Valley were the models for Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon; for decades, thousands of farmers comfortably worked 80-acre lots and prayed in small, ethnically uniform churches. But starting in the 1970s, Wobegon was hit with sinking commodity prices and job-cutting farm technology, a combo that sharply reduced the population. Churches foundered. The late hours, the fluorescent lights, the vicious competition, the fancy perks, the brilliant minds drowning in gallons of coffee and endless reams of paper. God knows they're not having much fun. But we are. It's a Tom-and-Huck scenario: they paint the fence, while we watch and pretend to get tired. Grisham doesn't try to glamorize it - in fact he works very hard to de-glamorize the way corporate litigation...
...None of this is to say that The Associate is a bad book. God knows it's not hard to read - with the exception of a miscalculated subplot about one of the frat brothers going to AA, it ticks along lightly and pleasantly - it's crafted and paced with the same signature glossy perfection that makes Grisham, book for book, probably the best-selling novelist in the world. It's just that it's not about anything. In fact it's amazing that anybody could put together a book that is this compulsively readable while at the same time being...
