Being religious became a complicated and self-conscious business. Sheed recalls himself as a "Dead End Kid masquerading as an altar boy," and he is still at it. The more reverent he feels, the more irreverent the throwaway lines: "Even the Christian God tactfully divides his roles into three, and Frank did his damnedest to divide himself into at least two, but he lacked the infinite capacity." It can all get a little like Woody Allen playing Humphrey Bogart playing St. Augustine...

...Connery. Then Bond turned into Roger Moore. Convinced that Bond was Connery, some moviegoers dismissed Moore as an impostor. Charlton Heston, conversely, performed a miracle of dramatic consolidation in the 1950s and '60s. He became Moses, Ben-Hur, Michelangelo, Andrew Jackson and John the Baptist: everyone this side of God. Heston possessed such brooding gravitas that he could plausibly pass for an abstraction, the decalogue with a strong chin...

...antigovernment views on TV and in newspapers. "We want the people of Colombia to know that the army has never given us a chance," said Otero. "All they've given us is hot lead." At 4 p.m. on Wednesday, the voice of Chief Justice Reyes was heard pleading, "For God's sake stop shooting, otherwise there will be a holocaust...

L.A. does move, notably in a brutal, bloated car-chase sequence pilfered from Friedkin's nifty The French Connection. In his God's-eye-view shots and acrobatic love scenes, he also pays tribute to the styles of Martin Scorsese and MTV. So the villain, Counterfeiter Willem Dafoe, is no more rotten or less picturesque than the hero, William Petersen. So everybody stinks. It matters not when, like Friedkin, you have fashioned...

Akoan for Action Man: What kind of expensive military hardware took its form, according to the bearer's whim, from a cow's head, a rice bowl, a pair of rabbit ears, a water plantain, a whirlpool, a pumpkin, a canyon, or the cone-shaped head of the God of Longevity? The answer is kaware kabuto, which translates from the Japanese as "conspicuous helmets." These were the singular headgear worn into battle, or during the formal maneuvers preceding it, by Japanese clan leaders, before the accurate, quick-firing arms of the 19th century rendered the helmets, their wearers...
